A Broken Promise At The Train Station
Beth squeezed Dillan's hand tightly. The train to Perth slowed to a stop. They glanced at the crowd as it parted for the passengers getting off. "So," Beth sighed, "this is it." "I promise," Dillan said, her eyes fixed on the train, "we'll get married as soon as I get back." "We won't." Dillan froze, slowly turning her head. "I know about Maggie. I read your texts to her." "No, no it's not what-" "Just go." Beth released her hand, cradling it. Dillan stared, her hands clasped, pleading. The conductor blew his whistle. Dillan picked up her suitcase and entered the train car. Beth watched as Dillan sat beside a window, waving goodbye. She tucked her blonde curls behind her ear, tears streaming down her face. She walked back to her car, just as the train departed.
